Barcino, officially named Colonia Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino, was founded by the Romans in the late 1st century BCE under the reign of Emperor Augustus. Nestled strategically between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, it occupied a prime location on the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, benefiting from natural defenses provided by the Montjuïc hill and its proximity to the sea.
The city was designed following the typical Roman grid plan (cardo and decumanus), with its forum located near the present-day Plaça de Sant Jaume. The defensive walls, parts of which can still be seen today in the Gothic Quarter, protected a small but vibrant settlement that housed around 1,000 inhabitants during its early years.

Barcelona, located on the northeastern coast of Spain, is the capital of Catalonia and one of Europe’s most iconic cities. Its unique blend of history, culture, art, and architecture attracts millions of visitors each year. Barcelona’s history dates back to Roman times when it was founded as the colony “Barcino”. Remnants of this period can still be seen in the Gothic Quarter, where ancient walls and other archaeological traces of the Roman city remain. During the Middle Ages, Barcelona became an important Mediterranean port and a thriving commercial hub, contributing to its growth and prosperity. In subsequent centuries, Barcelona emerged as a cultural and political centre of Catalonia. The 19th century marked a significant transformation with the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the city through the Eixample district, designed by urban planner Ildefons Cerdà. This period also saw the rise of the Modernist movement, led by Antoni Gaudí, whose masterpieces such as the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló have become symbols of the city and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The 20th century brought challenges, including the Spanish Civil War, but also cultural revival following the end of Franco’s dictatorship. A pivotal moment in the city’s modern history was hosting the 1992 Olympic Games, which transformed Barcelona and cemented its status as a global destination. Today, Barcelona seamlessly blends its historical legacy with a vibrant modern lifestyle. Its beaches, museums, markets like La Boquería, and bustling nightlife make it a unique destination. Known for its cosmopolitan spirit and commitment to innovation and sustainability, Barcelona stands out as one of Europe’s most dynamic and inspiring cities.
