About this typeface
ENG The myth of the Spanish gypsy woman, popularized by Prosper Mérimée in his famous novel Carmen, served as the inspiration for this typeface. It was originally commissioned for a new edition of Mérimée’s romantic tale. In the public imagination, the character of Carmen embodies the exotic and captivating beauty of the gypsy woman—olive-skinned, sensual, and fiercely independent. Carmen typeface captures that spirit, translating it into letterforms: a high-contrast neoclassical design with smooth, rounded terminals and delicate strokes as fine as golden threads. Its italics, slightly inclined and gently curved, feel soft and almost fragile—approaching the text like a graceful dance. Carmen expresses contrast, passion, and refined elegance in every line, making your words evoke the scent of orange blossoms.
