Carmen es un relato universal que narra la historia de amor, celos y muerte entre el militar Don José y la gitana Carmen que su autor –Mérimée–, trasmutado en viajero por la pintoresca Andalucía del XIX, hizo inmortal. El relato emana una manifiesta fascinación por esa España fantástica, a medio camino entre lo exótico y lo salvaje, que tanto sugestionó a los viajeros y artistas que se adentraban para conocer sus costumbres y paisajes.

The music of Carmen has since been widely acclaimed for brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere, and orchestration, and for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters. After the composer’s death, the score was subject to significant amendment, including the introduction of recitative in place of the original dialogue; there is no standard edition of the opera, and different views exist as to what versions best express Bizet’s intentions.

About this typeface

The myth of the Spanish gypsy woman, created by Prosper Mérimée in his famous novel Carmen, served as the inspiration for this typeface. It was commissioned for a new edition of Mérimée’s romantic novel.
In the public imagination, the character of Carmen embodies the exotic and captivating beauty of the gypsy woman, with olive skin and voluptuous sensuality. The Carmen typeface personifies that beauty, translating it into letterforms: a high-contrast Neoclassical typeface with sweet, rounded terminals and light strokes as fine as golden threads. Its italics, slightly inclined and gently rounded, are soft and almost fragile, approaching the text like a dance performance.
Carmen typeface expresses contrast, passion, and sophisticated elegance within the text, making your words evoke the scent of orange blossoms.
