Vojtěch Preissig was born on the 31st of July, 1873 in Světec, Bohemia. His father was a mining engineer. In 1884 he moved to Prague where he studied at the School of Applied Industrial Art from 1892 to 1896, then at the School of Decorative Architecture from 1897 to 1898. In 1897 he moved to Paris and worked for two years with the Czech Art Nouveau artist, Alphonse Mucha. His early, Secessionist, work was influenced by Japanese art and Symbolism. He returned to Prague in 1903 where he founded the periodical Česká Grafika, published the book Barevný lept a barevná rytina (Color Etchings and Color Engravings) in 1909 and opened his own graphics studio in 1905. Unfortunately, the graphics studio was not a financial success so he moved to the United States in 1910 and worked as an art instructor. Preissig remained in the United States until 1930.

Narodil se ve vile Jakobi v obci Světec. Na jeho počest je v obci Světec náměstí Vojtěcha Preissiga. Jeho otec byl důlní inženýr a v roce 1884 se přestěhovali do Prahy. Od jedenácti let studoval na 1. české reálce v Ječné ulici v Praze, kde v roce 1892 odmaturoval. V maturitním vysvědčení má oznámkované kreslení: „výborný, – práce vynikají hojností a dokonalým provedením“

About this typeface

ENG Czeska draws its inspiration from the woodcuts of Czech artist Vojtěch Preissig (1873–1944), crafted in the early 20th century. The alphabet captures the charm of handmade strokes, where imperfection becomes a defining strength, imbuing the typeface with unique energy and graphic power. Each stem and contour reveals the tactile richness of carved wood, creating a lively rhythm that, though unconventional, maintains clear legibility. Czeska includes an OpenType feature that alternates glyphs as you type, enhancing the sense of handmade and organic texture wherever the typeface is used. The Czeska family includes a wide range of characters and ligatures in both regular and italic styles.

ESP Czeska es una tipografía inspirada en los grabados en madera del artista checo Vojtěch Preissig (1873–1944), creados a principios del siglo XX. Su trazo artesanal da forma a un alfabeto donde la imperfección se convierte en una cualidad expresiva, aportando energía y personalidad gráfica. Cada asta y contorno transmite la textura viva de la madera tallada, generando un ritmo visual dinámico y poco convencional, pero siempre legible. La tipografía cuenta con una función OpenType que alterna automáticamente los glifos al escribir, reforzando su carácter manual y orgánico. La familia Czeska ofrece una amplia gama de caracteres y ligaduras, tanto en estilo regular como en cursiva.

Cada asta i contorn transmet la textura viva de la fusta tallada, generant un ritme visual dinàmic, poc convencional però sempre llegible.
